A Somewhat Cold Update

Photo by Mara Ket on Unsplash

It’s almost two in the morning, and I really should be in bed. Instead, I’m sitting in front of my desk1 trying to draft this, the hopefully first post of 2022. I spent the past two or three days browsing various websites that offer free stock photos as I couldn’t decide if I wanted to rush a post about my goals and hopes for this year, or if I wanted to go back into this whole blogging thing at a slower pace…though since I’ve not posted since the 18th of October 2021, you could say that I’m moving at the speed of a three-toed sloth 2. However, if you consider the fact that a three-toed sloth probably has a destination, then I’m definitely slower. I have been so unconcerned about making sure that this site had any updates…or any of my various projects. All I have been doing since my Mom’s death in the Summer of 2018 is renewing my domains or moving a gifted one to a cheaper extension. My eventual plan is to do book reviews and other such bookish things on that site. Right now? It only has a somewhat lackluster introductory post, and I’m drafting “The European Traveller Book Tag.” I also have a list of about 30 or so ideas for future posts – I might have just as many, or more, for this site if I would gather them all in a single document.3

If you read the last footnote, you’re probably thinking that my apartment is like one you’d see on that TV show, Hoarders. I assure you that it’s in no way close to being similar to the homes shown on there. I will admit, however, that before I move4 I really need to do another purge. It doesn’t help matters when I currently have 132 MB of storage space left on my HP Stream, which still needs a name. So uninstalling both The Sims 4 and Origin has left me with almost 24GB of free space, which will only increase as I get the assortment of blog posts and pages edited, then published. I am beginning to think that my biggest obstacle to having a successful website is either the fact that I procrastinate too often or I’m an extremely boring person.5 The fact that I am currently at the mercy of my cell phone and God doesn’t help matters any.

Moving on to something a bit brighter, I still need to write a post telling y’all about my new puppy, Kiki. It’ll be drafted after I publish my post about my hopes, wishes, and dreams for 2022 – it will hopefully be published around her birthday, 25th of January. In other somewhat good news, I’m now getting monthly allergy shots instead of weekly – those of you who follow me on Twitter will already know a bit about my two weekly shots. For the non-followers of my Twitter, I am allergic to most grasses and trees where I live, mold, and dust mites.6.

In the past two months, I have managed to make both Chicken & Dumplings with homemade dumplings and Ham & Beans. I don’t care to make such dishes as I usually end up with quite a bit of leftovers -one’s an old family tradition that I’ve not been following since my Mom’s death, mainly because I don’t care for the dish. The other’s only made when I go to the pantry and get a whole chicken, or when someone gives me one. Prior to my neighbor’s death, the one who used to live across the sidewalk, I was more interested in making Chicken & Dumplings as I knew I could give her a large bowl whenever I made some. The only other thing I’ve been doing since I last posted was watching a few TV shows like Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The only relatively new thing I’ve watched is Black Widow, which I absolutely loved…but I’m more a fan of Marvel than of DC Comics. I will admit that I’ve enjoyed both Wonder Woman movies – Gal Gadot is amazing, and Aquaman but have you seen Jason Momoa?

This year, I’m hoping to read a total of 100 Books this year; watch both the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Pretty Little Liars…and I’m taking content away from my next post. So I’m going to end this one here and get to drafting the next one.

  1. Actually, it’s a drafting table if you want to be nitpicky.
  2. 2.4 meters per minute on the ground
  3. They’re currently on various pieces of paper all around my apartment.
  4. Hopefully, in the next 6 months or so. *fingers crossed*
  5. Honestly? It’s probably a combination of both. *shrugs*
  6. Please note that I didn’t say dust – my allergist gets very angry if I say I’m allergic to dust AKA dead parts of people.

Rainy Day Activities for A Single Girl

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

At this point, I’m almost convinced that no one has read a single word that I have posted on here and there truly isn’t a point in my even attempting to come up with new things to write. For the unawares, the majority of my regular blog reads haven’t been updated in months, some even more than a year. Personally, I have gone quite some time without having updated Thoughts of Jessica, and I’ve even moved my blog at least a dozen times. The fact still remains that it’s crucial to write your posts to capture the attention of your target audience…but what are you to do if you don’t have a target audience? I honestly haven’t the slightest idea, which is why I’m writing a post about my favorite activities to do indoors when it’s raining. The majority of these are things that can be done by yourself, but there are one or two that might be more fun with a partner.

  • Binge watch a show on Netflix or a movie series like John Wick. 1 Bingeing a show or movie on a rainy day requires access to a screen of some sort, an account to your streaming service of choice, snacks- either healthy or unhealthy, and of course, somewhere to get cozy. I currently don’t have regular access to the Internet, or to any of the popular streaming services. So if I wanted to do this particular activity – a bit of planning is necessary. As soon as I finish prewriting this post and my phone gets enough of a charge to come back on, I am going to order all of the Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and the rest of the series, and resume watching Channel Zero, which I heard about from a friend on Twitter.
  • Play your favorite video or computer game. What’s a girl to do on a cold, rainy or snowy day? My preferred activity involves making a hot drink – tea or coffee depending on my mood, and loading up The Sims 4. I then become immersed in whatever challenge or story that I’m playing. Or at least this used to be my preferred activity-not so much since the hot tea incident.
  • Curl up with a good, or not so good, book. Right now? This is probably one of my favorite rainy/snowy day, cozy activities. If you follow me on GoodReads, you’ll know that I almost always have three to five books I’m currently reading. It’s one of the reasons that when my friend Jamie asked if I wanted one of her old domains, Bookishly.Co, I barely hesitated to say Yes! Of course, it’s now Bookishly.Club as I couldn’t afford to renew it with its previous extension, and I’ve been stressing over it’s introductory post since I renewed/purchased it back in July and installed WordPress. Basically, I just really need to get over myself and write a damn introduction for Bookishly.
  • Do a bit of baking…or a lot of it. Scents are one of the best ways to trigger or save memories. I don’t do much baking as I have absolutely no self-control when it comes to food…if I buy a pack of Oreos, it’ll usually be opened and gone within the night. This is why I’m honestly still surprised that I have three packs of the Pokémon Oreos in one of my kitchen cabinets. I will admit that I did consider/am still considering putting them on eBay. However, they’re still easily available in stores or at least, I know my local Walmart still has them in stock. But back to baking…there are many benefits such as it makes your home smell absolutely delicious, and you can hopefully eat the results. For those of you who decide to make chocolate chip cookies, please do NOT eat the raw cookie batter. I know that it smells absolutely delicious before it’s cooked. Personally, this is the main reason I quit making cookies…no self-control. Luckily, there are options – I prefer to get The Cookie Dough Café Chocolate Chip Gourmet Edible Cookie Dough, which is available at practically every Walmart near me whenever I feel a craving coming. Right now? I’m purchasing the ingredients to make ‘Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes.’ I will be sharing both the recipe I’m using and pictures of the final product in a future post, so be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss when I post!
  • DIY Projects, or those little projects you keep putting off for whatever reason. Currently, I have about five or six of these tasks myself, ranging from refinishing furniture to creating artwork to hang in my apartment. A part of my reason for not having finished these projects is lack of money to purchase needed supplies and lack of a proper space to complete them. These excuses don’t apply to the art projects…that’s more of a self-confidence issue. I’m not 100% certain I want to display artwork I’ve personally created where other people could potentially view and judge it. 2
  • Write a letter. A part of me knows what you’re thinking – write a letter?! Why can’t I just send them a text or an instant message? Or even an email? I do agree that all of them are quicker options, and less personal. How many times have you sent a message online and then regretted something you said? If you said, never then you’re a way better person than myself and a lot of people that I know. The act of letter writing means that you have to sit down and think about how every single word, phrase, punctuation mark is coming across. Are you portraying the emotions you want? After the letter is written, you have several options…first is to actually mail the letter. Then there is the option to consider it an unsent letter. Personally, I deal with these in one of three ways – burning it, filing it, or as a future blog post. For the unaware, these will be found under the category ‘Unsent Letters’ but I’ve yet to add any posts under it yet…mainly due to the emotional toll writing letters takes on me. It’s even worse than writing certain blog posts which I’ve also been avoiding.
  • Clean house. As someone who’s allergic to both dust mites and mold, having a clean house is very important. It’s the act of achieving a clean house that causes me the most problems as I can only clean for a maximum of fifteen minutes at a time before my eyes begin to swell and I need to take an antihistamine or a couple. There is something planned that will help immensely with this problem, but I’ll write more about it at a later date. I’ve also been getting allergy shots, and broke out in hives for the first time last week (12th October, to be exact)…so I’m not looking forward to getting my shots tomorrow.

All of these are activities that don’t require leaving the house, but there are several things you can do on rainy days if you leave your house! I’ll write it on a day I’m actually more in the mood to be social. For now, what are some of your favorite ways to spend a rainy day?

  1. I was going to put Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure but I didn’t want to remind anyone of how much of an actual dork/nerd I truly am.
  2. It’s not like I ever have company since I’m 90% introvert, 10% extrovert.

Cautiously Optimistic This Time Around

When I first came up with the title for this, the first blog post of the revamped Thoughts of Jessica, I was feeling optimistic. But that was before…before I couldn’t figure out how to change the font used for the site title in the header only, before I tried to actually write this post without doing a rough draft first…before I began to remember how much I need support and feedback1 on any project I decide to undertake. Asking my neighbor if the font I chose for the site title looked good with the rest of the site helped restore a bit of my optimism, and some of my confidence. However, it’s now Friday the 30th of July and I still haven’t figured out one of the problems, I’m having with working on my site. I think that I’m going to have to contact the theme’s creator to see if I can get some assistance. I’m hoping that I can as this is one of my top free WordPress.org Themes. But I will keep y’all posted on my progress – either via another blog post or most likely via a tweet – all of my social media links are in the 85% complete sidebar to the right.

As for the sidebar only being 85% complete, there are still a couple of things that I need to add – a link to BrandBacker, as well as my affiliate links from ShareASale. I’m planning to monetize my site this time around, as I can’t keep hoping I will somehow raise the funds to keep it open. Currently, this is one of my longest owned domains – it’s tied with my former domain, bemusedly.net. However, y’all will be able to read all about my sordid domain history within the next couple of weeks…hopefully. I’m expecting some news in the next week or so that could possibly keep me from doing any major work around here but it’ll improve my life – which in turn would allow me to write more interesting blog posts. Because let’s face it – my life is pretty boring…I do the same things almost every single day, with the only exception being every Tuesday morning.2

In other life news, I’m currently 21 books behind on my yearly reading goal of 150 books this year. Y’all can view what I’m currently reading (usually the top book on the sidebar) as well as a few of my “To Be Read” books on the sidebar. At the moment I’m writing this post, I’m reading “People Who Eat Darkness” by Richard Lloyd Perry. It’s the true story of Lucie Blackman, and her death. Recently my interest in the true crime genre has renewed, and I’m considering doing a series on here related to True Crime but not certain that is something I want to do, or how often I want to do it – right now? Monthly, might be the best option so that I have time to properly research whichever case I’m presenting to all y’all.

Speaking of potential future posts, would anyone object if I decided to revive blog posts from my old domains? I would update them to reflect my thoughts and my personality today in mid-2021 or whenever they’re reposted. If I decide to do this, it’s then a matter of when to post them and what to call the category – Revisions, Retrograde, Throwback?

Some of you might have noticed that I’ve added a new main link in the navigation – Sims. The Sims has been an obsession of mine ever since it first came out back on 4th of February 2000. It’s how I deal with practically every problem and emotion that overwhelms me – it keeps my anxiety at levels that I can handle. But I’ve gotten a bit sidetracked – the Sims link in the navigation is so I can share all of my Sims-related content such as my Alternate History save file3, my personal gameplay photos via Insomniac Sims, as well as challenges I’m doing via my Simblr and CC pieces that I love and use in my game. The eventual goal is to actually upload Sims videos to my YouTube channel, as well as semi-weekly vlogs on a separate channel. Honestly, this…everything depends on my ability to afford the equipment to properly do the various tasks as well as my rebuilding self-confidence so I don’t feel like a complete idiot when doing them.

In everything I’ve read on blogging, it’s suggested that posts are ended with a question for all y’all. Generally, I have trouble writing an actual, coherent posts so the thought of having to think of a question to ask y’all is enough to make me want to go take a nap. Sidenote, that’s exactly what I’m about to do after I get the rest of the support section of the sidebar semi-completed.

  1. Any kind, even negative, works for me.
  2. Those who follow me on Twitter already know what I do. Comment “Shots! Shots! Shots!”
  3. Coming soon, hopefully!
